Archeology Team Visits Little Fork Church
On Monday March 20 the archeology team arrived around 9:30. After a few moments pausing to stretch their legs from the long trip they were anxious to get to the site. The DHR team (Brad, Johanna and Mike) had just received a brand new GPR machine and began putting it together while Dave from Jamestown Rediscovery wanted desperately to make an initial pass over the mound. I could tell by his expression that he thought their time here would not be wasted.
We spent the morning setting measuring points and laying out a 100-foot North South by 80-foot East West grid on the top of the mound then began to “Mow the grass” with the GPR. Starting from the Western 100-foot edge recording measurements all the way to the Eastern edge 80-foot away then dragging the machine back to the Western edge to begin again one foot to the South from the first.
In the afternoon we laid out potential spots to surface sample and used their survey equipment to plot the coordinates of the mound and all the dig spots as well as site in as many geographic spots to relocate if they were to return.
Tuesday began at 8:30 with more than the four of us. Teams from Germanna came to sift for clues while the original four began to survey the grounds between the Church and Parish Hall as well as to the roadway. Without any spoiler alerts I can say we found the Privy and it’s full of Rubble.
